Failure to Launch Syndrome (FTLS) is a general term that describes adult or nearly-adult children who have difficulty thriving without parental support. Children may live at home, not work or be under-employed, or otherwise not live up to their full potential. There are many reasons that FTLS can be impacting your family.
Mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, OCD, and more can cause FTLS. A young adult who struggles significantly with anxiety, for instance, may have trouble applying for jobs, attending interviews, asking friends to engage in activities, or asking potential partners on dates. Depression can consume regular working/daytime hours, decades motivation, and delay emotional development. OCD can completely stop healthy development and severe OCD can cause people to drop out of school or lose jobs.
If FTLS is even partially caused by an underlying mental health issue like these, therapy may be an effective step towards getting your young man moving forward with a healthy, independent life. Often times therapeutic intervention may help young adults develop the interpersonal skills, coping skills, and motivation to achieve to their fullest potential.
