What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy focused on understanding the thoughts and feelings that impact our behaviors. CBT has been well-researched among children and is widely considered to be one of the the most effective treatments for many mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression

It may be easiest to understand CBT by using an example. "Johnny" has been struggling with depression for many months. He can still get to school, but it is taking more effort from his parents to get him moving in the morning and in the afternoons he seems to have no energy and has started to express critical thoughts about himself.

If Johnny were to seek CBT therapy, he may learn to understand his self-critical thoughts and combat them with more realistic or positive thoughts. He may also learn to understand how his feelings of depression guide him to withdraw from friends at school and will then practice. engaging even if he is having more depressive symptoms on any given day. If he learns to combat his negative thoughts and feelings Johnny would find it easier to have a more positive self-talk, feel more confidence interacting with peers, and be able to recognize his successes.
